HAZ_TREE_RISK
dataset:
HAZ_TREE_RISK
This dataset was created after Black Saturday in 2014 to identify the areas of Victoria which had Tree Hazard risk and were no longer safe for fire fighters. A range of variables were assessed to identify areas of higher risk which was used in conjunction with the work completed by Anthony Cheesman in 2014 and 2009 on fire killed ash. This dataset has been updated from the 2016 version and was updated in 2022.
This dataset displays Hazardous Tree (HT) risk across the Victorian public land estate.
Areas of public land have been allocated to one of four hazardous tree risk categories (1 = Diminished, 3 = High, 4 = Very High) based on the following equation:
Eucalypt ecological fire tolerance level + Fire Severity = Hazardous Tree Risk Rating.

Lineage
- Statement
- Dataset Source: fire severity data, EVC and SFRI forestry data Built in 2014, using in the development of this dataset BLD_FKA_EASTVIC_2014 as well as work completed by Hans Van Elmpt and Frazer Wilson in 2010/11 BLD_FIRE_KILLED_ASH_2003_TO_2009 was also used in the later version which was built upon by A Cheesman in 2014. Several iterations have been done in 2016 and now in 2022. Dataset Originality: Derived

Quality
Attribute Quality
- Comments
- Source data attributes logical and consistent.
Positional Accuracy
- Comments
- Source data accurate to approximately 1:25000 (fire sev and sfri) and 1:100000(sveg). The data was originally compiled as an ESRI grid dataset with 20m cell size.
Conceptual Consistency
- Comments
- Source attributes are logically consistent.
Missing Data
- Comments
- Coverage is for the public land estate of Victoria Completeness Verification: This data has not been ground-truthed or verified. As this is a derived and modelled dataset, accuracy of this data is depending on the accuracy of input datasets (SFRI, SVEG, fire severity, LASTLOG25, PLMGEN) and also robustness of methodology. It should also be noted that there are some factors which are known to cause hazardous trees on a local scale (e.g. disease, age, drought, and other weather events) that will not be detected in this approach.
Excess Data
- Comments
- Final data is in vector format - classified in the following format 1 = Diminished, 3 = High, 4 = Very High
