Relief Labels - Vicmap Features of Interest
dataset:
GEO_AREA_RELIEF_LABEL
OBSOLETE dataset from 5 May 2020, records have been distributed to EL_RELIEF_AREA_FUZZY
Geographic Areas Relief Labels, which depict such features as plains and ranges, are sourced from annotation layers and hence have limitations in the way they can be used. These polygons contain intelligent information including name, feature type and level, enabling flexible, intelligent and cartographic labelling which is both multi scale and non scale dependent.
Note: This dataset is only to be used for labelling purposes.

- Purpose
- Geographic Areas, which depict such features as seas, bays, ranges, plains and islands, are sourced from annotation layers and hence have limitations in the way they can be used. The purpose of this project was to capture polygons representing these areas for the purposes of map labelling. These polygons would contain intelligent information including name, feature type and level, enabling flexible, intelligent and cartographic labelling which is both multi scale and non scale dependent. The Geographic Areas data set can be used for all Vicmap Topographic outputs, at any scale and using index or non-index generation processes and hence meets the "one source many outputs" philosophy of Vicmap Topographic mapping. Current products utilizing geographic areas are: " Vicmap Topographic Hardcopy Mapping Program Vicmap Topographic 1:25 000 Vicmap Topographic 1:25 000 GeoReferenced " Vicmap Topographic 1:30 000 online " Vicmap Topographic 1:50 000 Vicmap Topographic 1:50 000 GeoReferenced " Vicmap Topographic mapping by centroid " Geographic areas can also be used for other mapping products outside of Vicmap Topographic. The scale range of use from 1: 5 000 to 1: 10 000 000, statewide and seamless coverage and dynamic labelling capabilities make it ideal for web mapping systems such as Information Services Branch land Channel and DSE's Mapshare. Any customized mapping project within Information Services Branch, DSE and whole of Victorian Government should gain benefits from using this dataset. Potential duplication of effort will be removed and it will ensure a consistency of information across all map output products.

- Description
- Relief areas were identified on compilation maps displaying MORPH25 annotation. Arbitrary lines where created for linear features such as ranges, spurs, and gorges. These lines, following crests, watersheds, watercourses, and the extent of MORPH25 annotation were then buffered to a distance of 500 meters for small ranges, 350 meters for spurs and 150 meters for gorges, saddles and gaps. Other geographic features, such as large ranges, plateaus, plains and deserts were screen captured using contour information and MORPH25 annotation to determine the area extent. The coastline determined the boundary for islands. The riverbank and the location of MORPH25 annotation determined the boundary for river bends. For mapping and display purposes each polygon would be labelled with the name of the feature. The boundary line, except where it forms a topographic feature such as coastline, would not shown.
- Statement
- Dataset Source: Geographic Areas depict such features as seas, bays, inlets, and coves, and ranges, saddles, plateaus, isthmuses and islands and can be divided into relief and hydrographic features. The original source depicting this information was the single format 1:25 000 hardcopy mapping sheets produced from 1975 to 1995. These features are shown as text cartographically placed over the feature extent. As part of the conversion to digital data process in the 1990s, each 1:25 000 map sheet was scanned. The relief and hydrographic area map textual information was incorporated as annotation as part of the SDMB-T (State Digital Map Base - Topographic) layers MORPTH25 and SHORE25 respectively. Note that this information was created specifically for use at 1:25 000 and was dependent on the 1:25 000 index system There is no Vicmap dataset that contains spatial information depicting geographic areas. So to display this information for Vicmap Topographic purposes the SDMB_T annotation layers were used. This posed some limitations in its use. For instance the annotation for the text 'PORT PHILLIP BAY" was created over the extent of the feature for every single format 1:25 000 map where the feature occurred. Hence over a Vicmap Topographic 1:25 000 mapsheet, which is two single format sheets side by side, this textual information would potentially be displayed twice. This same annotation may be truncated on the edges of Vicmap Topographic 1:30 000 A4 map sheets (see fig 1.) On the Vicmap Topographic 1:50 000 map sheets the annotation may not be readable due to its reduced size, and may appear several times in the map area. Dataset Originality: Primary & Derived
