Tree Cover
dataset:
TREE100
Polygons showing tree cover as defined by woody vegetation greater than 2 metres in height and with a crown cover (foliar density) greater than 10%.
Tree cover is mapped down to a minimum area of one hectare.
This layer was derived from LANDSAT TM digital data.

- Purpose
- To be used as a base cover of permanent tree cover for most purposes. Areas of temporary change have been removed. This layer depicts polygons showing tree cover as defined by woody vegetation greater than 2 metres in height and with a crown cover (foliar density) greater than 10%. Tree cover is mapped down to a minimum area of one hectare. This layer was derived from LANDSAT TM digital data.

- Supplemental Information
- History: This layer replaces the TREE100_9093 dataset that was removed from the Corporate Geospatial Library in November 1995. It also supersedes the TREE100_90 dataset which was dropped on 7 June 1996. Relationship to other Datasets: There will be a layer that depicts tree cover change. Current Design Issues: The layer was created to give an accurate assessment of tree cover extent for the state of Victoria and to provide a baseline dataset for further projects based around tree cover. This layer shows the presence or absence of trees only. Future Design Issues: There will be a layer developed that shows tree cover change. This layer may be used as a base for future tree cover mapping in 1995. Related Documents: None Tree cover change in Victoria c.1869-1993. - Attribute Quality
- A random sampling technique was applied to each mapsheet of the 1990 dataset to assess reliability. Reliability varied from 81% to 89% averaging 84.5% across Victoria. The 1993 dataset highlighted errors in the 1990 dataset which were corrected resulting in a much improved accuracy over that initially sampled.

Lineage
- Description
- Digital (unsupervised) classification to produce 100 classes per LANDSAT TM scene carried out on ER Mapper. One hundred classes were assigned as having tree cover present or absent for each year. Tree cover classifications for each year were overlayed in GRID and a change dataset produced. Areas of change were checked and edited using aerial photography, local knowledge, existing maps, GIS analysis and field checking to produce areas of permanent and temporary change. The tree covered area includes areas of tree cover in both 1990 and 1993 plus areas of 1993 regrowth plus areas not tree covered due to temporary changes.
- Statement
- Dataset Source: Data was originally sourced from LANDSAT TM5 satellite images from Summer 1990 and 1993. Dataset Originality: Primary
