dataset: LCOV250
The landcover dataset originates from the Murray Darling Basin Project M305 - Structural Vegetation for the Murray Darling Basin. Landcover describes the cover type present at that point in time that the mapping was undertaken. It should not be confused with public land which describes the management or use of the land. For example, an area may be managed as a pine plantation (land use) but may be bare for any period of time (landcover).

Purpose
This dataset has been derived using existing CGDL hydrology, visual interpretation and digital classification of 1990 Landsat TM imagery. There are seven land cover categories mapped. All categories, except vegetation and water bodies, have been mapped to a minimum area of 50ha. Vegetation and water bodies have been identified to 1ha patches. The land cover classification is based on Anderson et al (1976) "A land use and lad cover classification system for use with remote sensor data". US Geological Service. Although collected at 1:100,000, the general nature and coarse resolution of most land cover categories dictates that the dataset be used as a 1:250,000 dataset.

Lineage

Description
Vegetation landcover was digitally classified from Landsat TM. All other categories were interpreted and collected as vector polygons. The vegetation data was polygonised and added to the remaining landcover categories to form LCOV250.
