Shorebird roosting sites on the Victorian coast
dataset:
SHOREBIRD_ROOSTING_SITES
This layer identifies shorebird coastal roosting sites in the Victorian coastal region and was produced for the Victorian component of the Oil Spill Response Atlas. Sites were identified from a range of published and unpublished sources of information, and from personal communications made by experts in the field.

- Purpose
- This layer was created for inclusion in the Victorian component of the Australian Oil Spill Response Atlas.
- Supplemental Information
- Relationship to other Datasets: The 1:25,000 digital coastline of Victoria and 1:25,000 hydrology were predominantly used as base layers to identify site locations. Future Design Issues: Other points may be added if regions not previously covered are surveyed in the future. Related Documents: None

- Statement
- Dataset Source: Information was mainly derived from databases maintained by the Arthur Rylah Institute, Birds Australia, Bird Observers Club and Australian Wader Study Group. Other information has been derived from published reports and also personal observations of bird observers, coastal rangers and other relevant coastal management personnel. - Description
- This layer was created by combining two earlier OSRA shorebird datasets, one containing coastal roosting sites, the other containing roosting sites in Port Phillip Bay. The new layer was then updated with new sites. Shorebird roosts were either digitised from maps found in the relevant information sources, interpretation of aerial photography or by utilising the digital 1:25,000 coastline and hydrographic layers as base layers.

Quality
Attribute Quality
- Comments
- Attributes have been verified by the Fish and Habitat Ecology Section, Fisheries Research Branch, DPI Queenscliff, and are complete.
Positional Accuracy
- Comments
- The horizontal and vertical accuracy of the site locations have not been verified in the field. These points represents the approximate centre of the primary shorebird roosting sites, but bird species may also move into adjacent or surrounding areas depending on daily weather conditions, winds, variations in coastal environments etc.
Conceptual Consistency
- Comments
- Not Known
Missing Data
- Comments
- The layer is complete for major bird roosts in coastal Victoria, but more sites are likely to exist in some regions where detailed surveys have not been undertaken.
