Vicmap Lite - Place Name Point - 1:250,000 to 1:5,000,000
dataset:
VMLITE_LOCALITY
This layer is part of Vicmap Lite and contains point features delineating townships. Vicmap Lite datasets are suited for use between scales of 1: 250,000 and 1 : 5 million. The point features were sourced from TOWNS_SEAUS. The level of attribute information and the number of features has been simplified to suit the 1: 250,000 - 1 : 5 million scale range. The concept of a Scale Use Code has been introduced to help control the level of detail displayed.

- Supplemental Information
- Current Design Issues: The classification scheme used is not strictly based on Town population size. Some minor towns in terms of population have been raised in status because of their remoteness or their postion in relation to the road, rail or stream network. Most suburbs of cities such as Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Albury have been assigned the minimum level classification to avoid clutter when labelling towns in dense urban areas. - Statement
- Dataset Source: Derived from the L100MGA library group LOCN dataset and the L1000-DD94DCW library group PPPOINT dataset. Dataset Originality: Derived
- Description
- Collection Method: Derived from source
- Description
- The ESRI Digital Chart of the World dataset PPPOINT was clipped to the extent of the MAPBASE_G200 dataset to limit the data to the South East region of Australia. The PPPOINTppptype item along with the case of the associated pptname item was used to classify towns across the whole extent of the dataset into three levels which equate to levels 1,2 and 3 in the new dataset. Levels 4, 5, 6 and 7 were then manually assigned to major towns, regional centres, cities and capital cities respectively. Towns that existed in LOCN but not in PPPOINT were then assigned a level of 0. This initial classification was then manually adjusted to suit cartographic purposes. Towns that existed in both LOCN and the working dataset were joined by name and the relevant points from locn substituted for the less accurate data from PPPOINT. Scale Use Code attribute then added and populated.

Quality
Attribute Quality
- Comments
- The general validity of the classification scheme was verified by comparison with published map sources such as Melways. All names were processed to ensure consistent capitalisation of the words.
Positional Accuracy
- Comments
- Same as LOCN within Victoria (10m to 100m (will vary according to source map)
Conceptual Consistency
- Comments
- A consistent subset of the LOCN dataset within Victoria with a classification code added.
Missing Data
- Comments
- All locations classified as Town in the spatial dataset LOCN have been incorporated along with all named towns extracted from the relevant tiles of the ESRI Digital Chart of the World PPPOINT dataset. Completeness Verification: The completeness of the dataset was verified by overlay with the VICMAP VMFEAT.PL_PLACE_AREA_POLYGON dataset to ensure that no major towns (big enough to warrant mapping via a polygon extent) were missing. The general validity of the classification scheme was verified by comparison with published map sources such as Melways.
