Victorian Bioregions - Mapped at 1:100,000 (version 3.0 - May2004)
dataset:
VBIOREG100
This dataset delineates Victorian biogeographic regions (Victorian bioregions) that capture the patterns of ecological characteristics in the landscape, providing a natural framework for recognising and responding to biodiversity values. Victorian bioregions form part of the national framework for the terrestrial environment, the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia (IBRA). The boundaries are aligned with pre-1750 ecological vegetation class boundaries mapped at 1:100,000. The dataset upgrades the VBIOREGION250 dataset which was primarily based in 1:250,000 landsystem boundaries.

- Purpose
- Biogeographic regions (bioregions) capture the patterns of ecological characteristics in the landscape, providing a natural framework for recognising and responding to biodiversity values. As bioregions reflect underlying environmental features, they can also be related to the patterns of use of land and sea, and thus can be used to identify the relationship between many natural resource based activities and biodiversity assets. Bioregions identified in Victoria form part of the national framework for the terrestrial environment, the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia (IBRA). Of the eighty IBRA regions delineated across Australia, eleven regions occur in Victoria with eight of these shared with adjacent States. The broad scale that is appropriate for national purposes does not adequately discriminate between areas that are meaningful at the Statewide scale and further refinement has delineated 28 Victorian bioregions. Victorian bioregions are equivalent to the Victorian part of IBRA subregions. The layer will primarily support flora and fauna biodiveristy evaluations and management. The layer has been used to subdivide extant EVCs for the purposes of determining a bioregional conservation status rating for EVCs. The dataset incorporates 6 new Victorian Bioregions to those identified in the VBIOREGION250 dataset.

- Supplemental Information
- Relationship to other Datasets: The Bioregions identified in this dataset are directly related to the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia (IBRA) units identified in the IBRA500 dataset. The VBIOREG100 dataset represents a more detailed interpretation of the 1:250,000 VBIOREGION250 bioregional boundaries, and effectively supersedes this dataset. The boundaries are aligned with patterns represented in pre-1750 EVC mapping at 1:100,000. The dataset uses the 1:100,000 state boundary from VIC100. The dataset has been used in combination with EVC_CMP100 to create the EVC_BCS100 dataset which identifies the Bioregional Conservation Status of EVCs. Current Design Issues: The layer design supports a Victorian Bioregion reference number, code and name, and the corresponding IBRA category. The dataset also incorporates a land type item in line with the VIC100 dataset to differentiate land areas from significant water bodies. Future Design Issues: None at this stage. Quality
- Conceptual Consistency
- There is a logical consistency between bioregion numbers, codes and names, and between bioregions and IBRA codes.
- Missing Data
- The dataset is complete for Victoria with boundaries in the North West upgraded in October 2003 after completion of the pre-1750 EVC mapping, and boundaries around the Monaro Tableland Bioregion modified in May 2004 after a review of New South Wales vegetation mapping.
- Attribute Quality
- Based on attribute checking procedures: 1. polygons GT 4ha: an error of 1 in 50 (approximately 98% accuracy). 2. polygons LT 4ha: an error of 1 in 20 (approximately 95% accuracy).
- Positional Accuracy
- Precision: 100m to 1km Determination: EVC information is registered to the 1:100,000 base features. Positional accuracy is a function of pen thickness, base accuracy and nature of boundaries mapped. Map errors of 0.5 mm to 3 mm, or 50 m to 300 m are possible.
Lineage
- Description
- No spatial dataset processing has been undertaken.
- Statement
- Dataset Source: This dataset has been created from a review of the earlier 1:250,000 dataset (VBIOREGION250) and an expert interpretation of pre-1750 mapping by Mr David Parkes, Flora and Fauna, NRE with the support of other NRE staff. The dataset has been cross referenced with the National IBRA dataset and bioregions identified in both NSW and South Australia and will be incorporated in the next version of the national dataset where relevant. Boundaries are generally aligned with patterns represented in pre-1750 EVC mapping at 1:100,000 but are not exactly aligned with any boundaries in this mapping. Dataset Originality: Primary
