2019-20 Budj Bim LiDAR Project
project:
cep25-2019-20_budj-bim_LiDAR
On behalf of the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (GMTOAC), DELWPs Coordinated Imagery Program undertook
an aerial LiDAR and concurrent imagery survey over the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape including Lake Condah and the lava flow
down to the southern coast; an area totalling 300km2. The site has been formally recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage list
for its Aboriginal cultural values mainly relating to aquaculture which date back to over 6000 years.
The primary purpose of the survey was to collect data of sufficient detail to support the identification and mapping of cultural
heritage features known to exist throughout the area. The valuable data would also support landscape assessment and land management
activities. The surveyed data includes 10cm true colour aerial photography and highly detailed LiDAR data at an aggregated
point density of approximately 80 points per square metre (ppsm). This was achieved through a combination of multi-swath captures
designed at 25-30 ppsm in the N-S, SW-NE & E-W directions. These were used to derive a range of standard and non-standard
DEM datasets and colourised LiDAR points clouds.
The data is considered culturally sensitive and requires permission by the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation
(GMTOAC) for access.
