Catch and Effort Cells for Rock Lobster Quota Fishery

dataset: CE_ROCK_LOBSTER_2001
This layer features the area cells used to record Catch and Effort data for the Rock Lobster and Giant Crab commercial fisheries since the introduction of quotas in April 2001. The area cell boundaries are based generally on divisions of 10 minutes of longitude and latitude. The southern boundary of the cells is based on the Victorian jurisdiction as described in the OCS agreements (on the border shared by Tasmanian waters).

Purpose
The CE_ROCK_LOBSTER_2001 layer provides a grid of cells on which various summary catch and effort data for the Victorian Rock Lobster and Giant Crab quota fisheries can be imported, displayed, and analysed. Catch and effort data can be used to display trends in fishing activity. Summary information such as extent of catch, total catch, effort, catch per unit area, and catch per unit effort can be represented. This information is crucial to ensure effective fisheries management, research and monitoring. This data set may be displayed in conjunction with a variety of environmental data capable of providing an insight into the behaviour of the Rock Lobster and Giant Crab. A depth model, ocean currents, temperature profiles and salinity levels, are useful data that may assist in gaining an understanding into the ecology of the Rock Lobster and Giant Crab.

Supplemental Information
History: 4 Feb 2004 - Creation of original layer and addition of new attributes and attribute values. 3 Mar 2005 - Exported layer to shapefile and projected to GDA. Relationship to other Datasets: The shorelines used in this layer are derived from the Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Office's 1:250,000 National Bathymetric Map Series. Current Design Issues: This layer was originally designed in accordance with the specifications set out in the Victorian Pot Fishing Logbook. It was later revised based on feedback received from the Catch & Effort unit, Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Queenscliff. Attribute Quality
All attributes have been validated by the Habitat Ecology section, DPI Queenscliff, and are complete.
Positional Accuracy
Grid cell boundary linework is generated from specific geographic coordinates, many of which are based on divisions of 10 minutes in longitude and latitude.

Lineage

Description
The polygons from a depth-stratified layer of area cells were dissolved into this dataset by their grid-reference area codes after the island polygons had their attributes changed to appear as separate features in the dissolved layer. In the new dataset, some extra attributes were added and other attributes were changed, and the polygons attributed with the new values. This dataset was later converted to a shapefile and projected into the Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA), and other attributes were added to this projected shapefile to give each polygon its Australian Standard Geographic Information Systems Geographic Data Interchange of feature-coded digital mapping data AS2482-1989 code and area in square metres and hectares.
