Thickness Corrected Wangerrip Group, Otway Basin
dataset:
THICK_WANGERRIP_GP
This dataset is a raster layer of the Top of the Wangerrip Group, Otway Basin in metres below sea level. The Wangerrip Group is part of the Lower Tertiary Aquifer (LTA) as outlined in the Victorian Aquifer Framework (VAF). Due to deficiencies in mapping previously completed by 3D Geo for Southern Rural Water in 2011, a number of processes were applied to correct the Top and Base and thus the Thickness of the Wangerrip Group.
The dataset was compiled by GHD to inform the report 'Potential Influences of Geological Structures on Groundwater Flow Systems' for DEPI's Secure Allocation Future Entitlements (SAFE) Project.

- Dataset Source: Seismic horizon 'phantoming' and gridding methods (using Surfer10) estimates for the Top, Base and Thickness of the Wangerrip Group were estimated. An assumption was made that faulting in the Top Dilwyn represented Top and Base Wangerrip Group faulting. Regional seismic mapping verifies this assumption. The corrections were made by tying the Top Dilwyn horizon (with faults) generated by 3D Geo to Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) supplied stratigraphic formation tops for the Top Wangerrip (generally Top Dilwyn) and the Base Wangerrip (typically late Cretaceous Top Sherbrook Group). Account was made of outcropping Wangerrip Group (typically Pebble Point units- Dilwyn was absent) on the western side of the Otway Ranges, where top Wangerrip Group was fixed to the topographic surface. The Base of the Wangerrip was connected to bedrock elevation data from bores to the north of the basin. This horizon correction exercise showed the variability (documented in the DEPI data) of interpreted horizon tops between various basin study workers and groundwater mappers over the years, depending on the stratigraphic (biodata, lithological, seismic or geophysical log) and basin study approaches at the time of the work. The DEPI formation tops were averaged with any large outliers left out. The Mepunga Formation was not mapped as part of this exercise. It is not as widespread as the Wangerrip group units and it would be speculative to force a Top Dilwyn surface to fit to a Top Dilwyn/Mepunga surface. As the Mepunga Formation is not considered, the LTA aquifer could be up to 100m thicker locally. Dataset Originality: Derived
