- This project represents a timeslice series of historical aerial photography datasets around the Port Phillip Bay Coast from the 1930's to the 1990's. The purpose of creating the ortho photo mosaics was to detect and measure changes (long term, progressive or cyclic) along the Port Phillip Bay shoreline. The type of shoreline change the photography aimed to identify included sandy beach-dune, scarped 'soft-rock', muddy mangrove shores and asset removal/construction. A secondary purpose of the photography was to map the change of vegetation along the seaward side of the bay. To achieve the purpose, a time series of repeated aerial photography was planned with epoch intervals of approximately 10 years (and a minimum of five years separation). The seven epochs planned for were 1930's,1940's,1950's,1960's,1970's, 1980's and 1990's. For any given epoch where the study area was not covered completely by a historic photography project (series of air-photos taken on the same date or within a few days of each other) then the next most recent photography project was identified, processed and used for comparison. The aim was to keep each epoch as close as possible. This data is only available for Whole of Victorian Government use.

- The following steps were undertaken to produce the ortho-photo mosaic datasets. Step 1 DEM production – placing contours over supplied DEM to check for distortions and correct where necessary. Primary aim to provide accurate orthophoto images, not a precision elevation data set. Step 2 Control selection from modern photography to ensure points able to be seen on selected historical images Step 3 Aerial triangulation - Automatic point measurement and bundle adjustment using Metashape Step 4 Rectification - Produce Orthophotos using Leica XPro RectifierTM Step 5 Colour balance imagery Step 6 Match joins – Produce Orthophoto using either Leica LPS and ERDAS ImagineTM / ER MapperTM Step 7 Deliverable’s Create outputs as per specifications The source photography and selection of frames was made for each mosaic based on similarity of scale, capture dates, best image clarity available and epoch representation. The source frame photography (in digital format) was previously scanned from analog film negatives scanned at 12um or 15um or, scanned from photography prints at 800dpi. The production order of the ortho-photo mosaics was generally from the most recent to oldest imagery (i.e 1990’s working back to the 1930’s). Modern imagery (within 10 years of 2018) of high accuracy and high detail was used as control as well as image control and verification points with the previously produced image epoch.
