Title: Coastal Boat Access Points - Boat Ramps, Boat Launches, Boat Slipways
Anzlic ID: ANZVI0803005437
Custodian:
Abstract:
This point layer identifies the location of coastal boat ramps, boat launches and boat slipways along the Victorian coastline.

Boat ramps are interpreted as having a sealed surface (usually concrete), where the water can be accessed by a boat trailer. The sealed surface extends into the water (at least at high tide). Boat launches have a natural surface where the water can be accessed by a boat trailer (usually across the beach). Boat launch sites will sometimes have a sealed surface from the road or car park to the top of the beach. Slipways are interpreted as facilities where a boat is transported to the water on rails.

Dataset Source: Boat access points were digitised from a number of data sources with validation using aerial photography. Data sources included VicMap Hydro Structures Line, Melway (Edition 35), VicMap 1:25,000 topo maps, VicMap MapBook, web sites (notably Gippsland Ports), data collected in 2004 by Marine Safety Victoria (now part of Transport Safety Victoria), and from Parks Victoria Assets dataset.

History: This dataset is based on boat ramp data created for the OSRA in 2004. The original boat ramp data was collected in two files, one covering Port Phillip Bay and Western Port and the other covering other parts of Victoria. This data was updated to a Victoria wide dataset with additional points added from other sources.

Relationship to other Datasets: Boat access points were digitised from information in the VicMap Hydro Structures Line, Melway (Edition 35), Aerial Photography (usually 2011-2013), VicMap 1:25,000 Topo maps and VicMap MapBook, web sites (especially Gippsland Ports website), data collected in 2004 by Marine Safety Victoria (now part of Transport Safety Victoria), and from Parks Victoria Assets dataset.

Current Design Issues: The dataset was created to assist contingency planning and response to oil spills by providing information on locations for launching oil spill response equipment.

Future Design Issues: New boat ramps or future upgrades to existing ramps will need to be added to the database.
