Primary watercourse entrances along the Victorian coastline.

dataset: MAJOR_RIVER_ENTRANCES
This layer identifies the entrances to major watercourses along the Victorian coastline. The layer is a points coverage with the point location representing approximately the centre of the watercourse entrance. Sites were identified from 1:25,000 topographic maps and consultation with coastal rangers. The layer is intended to provide oil spill response personnel with a guide to assist in determining response techniques to prevent oil slicks entering these river inlets in the event of an oil spill. Locations are classified as continously open or intermittently open.

Description

Title
Primary watercourse entrances along the Victorian coastline.
Alternate title
MAJOR_RIVER_ENTRANCES
Purpose
This layer was created for inclusion in the Victorian Australian Oil Spill Response Atlas.
Supplemental Information
History: Field observations by DPI personnel and knowledge of the sites provided by coastal rangers were used to obtain estimates of the widths of river entrances and whether the entrance is subject to natural seasonal closures. Sites were selected on the basis of the possibility of an oil slick moving upstream in the watercourse in the event of an oil slick approaching the coastline. Sites are mainly perennial watercourses with an entrance width greater than 5 m except under periods of low river flows when the watercourse entrance may be blocked by sand. Related Documents: None

Statement
Dataset Source: Information was derived from the 1:25,000 topographic hydrology layer, field observations by DPI personnel and information provided by DSE/DPI and Parks Victoria coastal rangers. Dataset Originality: Primary
Description
Collection Method: Field observations
Description
Watercourse entrances were digitised utilising the digital 1:25,000 coastline and hydrology layers as a base map. Point locations for watercourses were placed in the approximate centre of its entrance. Attributes for each point were then added.

Positional Accuracy
Comments
Locations of the watercourse entrances were identified utilising the 1:25,000 coastline and hydrology layers as base layers, but the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the site locations have not been verified in the field. The point symbol represents the approximate centre of the entrance and sources of variations in precision will primarily relate to seasonal and yearly movements of the entrances due to changing river flows and this will particularly affect entrances identified as being intermittently open.
