Priority Rivers based on the Index of Stream Condition

dataset: PRIORITY_RIVERS
Priority Rivers was created from two primary input datasets: (1) Victorian Priority Rivers 2008 (DEPI); (2) Significant Rivers (Melbourne Water Corporation (MWC)). The Priority Rivers 2008 dataset indicates high priority rivers across Victoria and relates to a combination of environmental, social and economic values. This information was derived from the Regional River Health Strategies that were developed by the various Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs). The RRHSs use a tool called RiVERS to assess waterways, of which the Index of Stream Condition (ISC) is a significant information source. Given that the ISC was developed for rural rivers and creeks, it is not relevant to MWCs urban waterways and hence MWCs jurisdiction was not included in the Priority Rivers 2008 dataset. Instead, MWC utilises a tool called the Index of River Condition (IRC), which was modified to account for the urban rivers and creeks in their operating area. For this reason a second dataset called ‘Significant Rivers’ was used for the MWC area to indicate the presence of high priority waterways.

Positional accuracy of the data varies according to the souce data. The Priority Rivers 2008 dataset is based on 1:100,000 scale mapping whilst the MWC rivers dataset is as accurate as 1:25,000 scale mapping.

Dataset Source: Priority Rivers 2008 was created using the following processes: (1) Victorian Priority ISC river reach data including ISC reaches considered to be priority. These reaches were joined to the ISC_REACH_04 shapefile such that a dataset of priority/not priority river reaches was created. This did not include any attribution of rivers in MWCs area. (2) MWC provided a dataset of Significant_Rivers. These rivers had attribution of significance ranging from low to very high. For the purpose of creating a 'consistent' statewide dataset of priority waterways, an assumption was made that 'very high' and 'high' significance rivers in MWCs area were similar to the 'priority' rivers for the rest of Victoria. (3) These two datasets were amalgamated to form one dataset called Priority Rivers. Dataset Originality: Derived
