Private Native Forest Stand Vegetation
dataset:
PNF100
As a part of a Victorian State Government initiative for Private Forest mapping was established to collect, collate and store forest resource information.
The PNF100 layer depicts forest stands interpreted visually from aerial photgraphs and image based mapping. A stand is an area of forest deemed to be homogenous in its species composition, crown cover, crown form, height and distribution for "modified code mapping".

- Purpose
- The PNF100 layer has been designed for the digital spatial analysis of Victoria's Private forest resource. The high level of detail captured on Private land allows for a range of analyses. It is used by government and private industry to assess the quantities and qualities of forest resources.
- Credit
- The generation of this data set has resulted from the sustained efforts from dedicated professionals from a range of intellectual backgrounds from within DSE, DPI and as well as from numerous private organisations.
- Supplemental Information
- Relationship to other Datasets: SFRI25VE growth stage has been used where it was mapped in the Private Land. Current Design Issues: Attributes represent the full PNF100 code broken up into its individual components with added items that are generally seen in SFRIFRED. It's usability limited to data analysts trained in interpreting the code. Quality
- Conceptual Consistency
- Polygon size is related to the type of mapping. All mapped polygons should exceed 7 hectares (ground units). Guidelines as used by DSE for forest stand mapping recommend polygon sizes of between 40 and 80 hectares for "modified code mapping". Larger polygons may arise due to the forest stand homogeneity. The polygon size minimum of 5 - 7 hectares and the Eucalypt crown-cover class is equal and /or greater than 4. (no less than 50%).
- Missing Data
- PNF100 captures the forest stages of growth (relative age) in Private land where there is significant forested areas. National Park type mapping used within SFRI project forms the basis for the PNF100 mapping. The area captured is the eastern part of the state (Zone55). Areas not covered include the west of the State, Zone54. Completeness Verification: The forest stand class linework, was validated by field checking, and referenced to existing map information and local knowledge.
- Excess Data
- The major goal of the aerial photograph interpretation (API) phase of the PNF100 project was to obtain a consistent and complimentary description of the eucalypt component of private forest. The forest stand size for the Modified Code mapping type ranged from 7-80 ha with most stands clustered between 10-20 hectares. High contrast forest stands could be as small as 7 ha however a mosaic of small stands with detailed boundary outline was not acceptable. Though this has occured in some places. The forest stand outline must be well defined and without the intricate linework that would define individual trees. A balanced approach between detail and stylised linework representative of logical and homogeneous forest units was required. The polygon outline for PNF100 mapping was reasonably stylised without any sharply defined or intricate detail. The polygon size was generally within the range 5 - 80 ha.
- Attribute Quality
- Interpretation of aerial photographs (API) using specialised skills and codes according to Statewide Forest Resource Inventory: Forest Stand Classification (Forests Service Technical Reports 00-1) and the PNF classification.
- Positional Accuracy
- The PNF100 layer is to be used with data sets that are commensurate with the Victorian Government's "VICMAP" 1:100,000 map scale digital map library. The data is designed to be stable for a fuzzy tolerance range of between 0.01 to 10 metres (ground units).
Lineage
- Description
- Production steps for the development of the PNF100 layer are; · Obtain photographic coverage at an appropriate scale, quality and currency, - Analogue and image based mapping · Interpret aerial photographs (API) using specialised skills and codes, - Using in part existing SFRI25VE growthstage mapping and updating with species and height in some areas. · Convert interpreted forest stand and base features to a digital format, · Register and rectify the API information using a "3D" process, · Audit digital information for spatial and attribute accuracy, · Check spatial robustness and cover tabular information to library standard, · Document the processes and the data. The in-house quality assurance steps that are carried out on digital PNF100 data include; · An initial audit of transfer contractors digital transfer work for both the spatial and attribute accuracy, · An audit of attribute definition consistency and item definitions, · A correction process for codes that have been error flag, · Exhaustive examination of codes on 1:25,000 tile basis for selected areas, · Edgematching all linework and attributes between 1:25,000 tiles, · Pre-library audit for topology, projections, tolerance, attribute table definitions, item definitions and indexing, · Check standard DSE documentation for completeness and accuracy, · Attach standard USGS-WRD & EPA (version 2) on-line documentation, and · Internal library consistency testing population the Arc/Info library.
