Biologically Important Areas
dataset:
BIOLOGICALLY_IMPORTANT_AREAS
Biologically Important Area data are spatially defined areas where aggregations of individuals of a regionally significant species are known to display biologically important behaviours such as breeding, foraging, resting or migration. This layer was originally produced by the Commonwealth of Australia (Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, 2015), and has been cropped to Victoria's state boundaries, and queried for temperate east marine regions (SEMR- south east marine region).

- Dataset Source: The BIA spatial data was captured via discussions and workshops with numerous species experts and/or through projects with key scientists. Each polygon was validated for spatial consistency using the scientific knowledge of the species along with comprehensive feedback provided by the experts. While the polygons are not comprehensive nor represent absolute limits they represent the biologically important areas that have been identified to date. With further research, other important areas may be identified and/or the area identified in this data may be refined. In 2015 new information was gathered for the Blue Whale Conservation Plan. The aim of the detailed attribute information is to provide details about the data that cannot be spatially defined such as source information. Dataset Originality: Derived
