Ramsar Wetland Areas in Victoria at 1:25 000

dataset: RAMSAR25
Polygons defining Ramsar wetland areas in Victoria. The Ramsar Convention of Wetlands of International Importance, to which Australia is a signatory, requires contracting parties to designate wetlands of international significance within their territory for listing under the convention. This layer is based on RAMSAR100 but has been realigned and updated to improve its accuracy. It has been updated to match current VICMAP parcel, road, hydro and water area data as well as using high-resolution digital aerial photography to improve its precision to 1:25 000.

Supplemental Information
Relationship to other Datasets: Relates to WETLAND_1994 in defining wetlands contained within Ramsar areas. Current Design Issues: A polygon layer that identifies each Ramsar area individually. Revisions will be required if new Ramsar sites are nominated or if boundaries of existing sites change. Any change or addition must occur under the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands of International Importance. Future Design Issues: None Proposed Related Documents: None Victorian Ramsar Sites: Definition & Boundary Clarification Project Report, December 1995, compiled by Elizabeth Beovich, National Parks Service. Lineage

Statement
Dataset Source: History: RAMSAR100 boundaries were originally derived from 1:100 000 land management boundaries (LANDMMT100), hydrology boundaries (HYDRO100) , and road boundaries (ROAD100). In 2001 the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands site was added, with linework derived from Vicmap Property. This source data has a precision of 1:12 500. The linework was then reviewed in 2012 using high resolution aerial photography and updated parcel boundaries. In September 2008, Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula, and Western Port site boundaries were updated based on higher resolution source data. In 2010, Corner Inlet, Gippsland Lakes, Lake Albacutya, and Western District Lakes were also updated from higher resolution source data with a precision of 1:25 000. In 2011 and 2012, Barmah Forest, Gunbower Forest, Hattah-Kulkyne Lakes and Kerang Wetlands were updated from higher resolution source data with a precision of 1:25 000. In 2012 and 2013 Corner Inlet, Gippsland Lakes, Lake Albacutya, Western District Lakes, Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula, and Western Port sites were all updated to reflect the current VICMAP parcel, road, water areas data as well as high-resolution digital aerial photography. This source data has a precision of 1:25 000 or better. This updated dataset has been renamed RAMSAR25 with some of the old attribute fields removed and lake_name added.
