Native Vegetation Time Stamping Dataset - Melbourne Growth Areas (VC68)

dataset: NV2011_TS_GA
This dataset is a definitive view of native vegetation extent and condition across Melbourne’s VC68 urban growth areas and incomplete Precinct planning areas within the Melbourne Urban Growth Boundary, time-stamped as at 13 December 2012. The area covered by the timestamping dataset aligns with the extent of the Biodiversity Conservation Strategy (BCS) for Melbourne’s Growth Corridors (DSE 2012). This dataset wholly replaces the previously released NV2011_TS_GA and includes the following changes: -inclusion of Number of Large and Very Large Trees in Surveyed remnant Patches -Remnant Patches have new Unique IDs to remedy issues in previous dataset The dataset only provides a view of native vegetation within the extent outlined above. Where a parcel is partially within the extent, the view of native vegetation only applies to areas applicable within the BCS.

Description

Title
Native Vegetation Time Stamping Dataset - Melbourne Growth Areas (VC68)
Alternate title
NV2011_TS_GA
Purpose
The Time Stamping Project has captured and "time stamped" native vegetation information within the area of the Melbourne growth corridors covered by the Biodiversity Conservation Strategy. This has established a definitive native vegetation dataset which has been used to determine habitat compensation obligations for future development proposals within these areas. The Time Stamping Project is a commitment under the Melbourne Strategic Assessment.

Statement
Dataset Source: 1. Modelled NV 2005 EVCs and QUALITY data (Source: DSE estimated data) Vegetation Type (EVC) modelling was developed at scales between 1:100,000 and 1:25,000 as a result of a number mapping projects during the 1990s and 2000s. This data is extracted from the dataset NV2005_EVCBCS. Native Vegetation Quality data produced largely from image analysis of LANDSAT imagery and thousands of site-based surveys covering Victoria. This data is extracted from NV2005_QUAL. 2. Rapid vegetation assessments ie. Better than the modelled NV2005 data but not the full on-site vegetation survey (Source: DSE estimated data) Rapid Assessments of vegetation type and quality have been carried out by experts using a combination of Air Photo Interpretation, over the fence surveillance and general expertise. Only summary attributes from the survey data have been included (see attributes) 3. Full Vegetation Quality Assessments. (Source: Site Survey Data) All Site Survey Data was captured according to the Vegetation Quality Assessment Manual (2004) between 2008 and 2011and has undergone rigorous Quality Assurance procedures. These include DSE trained and registered Vegetation Quality Assessors. Random Audits of assessors work. Thorough checking of submitted data. 4. Road extents and Man Made Features (Source: DSE estimated data) Road Extents: Using Vic Map data, roads were buffered by a minimum estimated width to exclude any DSE estimated native vegetation data, as follows: Local and collector roads were buffered by 5m either side of the centre line, freeways, sub-arterial, arterial and highways were buffered by 10m either side of the centre line. Other man-made features include buildings, water-bodies and driveways. These were captured using Aerial Photo Interpretation. Man Made Features and Road extents are identified as Non native vegetation. 5. Outer boundary of dataset VC68 Growth Area Boundary and incomplete Precinct Structure Plans (these include Truganina Employment Area, Wyndham Vale, Werribee Technology Park, Greenvale South (R3), Greenvale Activity Centre (A4), Mickleham Employment Area North (E2), Mickleham Employment Area South (E3), Hampton Park Hill, Casey Central Town Centre, Berwick Waterways, Beaconsfield, C21 Business Park, Officer Employment Dataset Originality: Derived
