Native Vegetation Regulation (2017) Habitat Importance Maps (HIM) for VROTs species
dataset:
NVR2017_HIM
This replaces SPECIES_HABITAT_V4_HPNV, which had replaced V4_HDNV and V4_HINV. This data series is a set of spatial maps describing importance of suitable habitat within the current extent of native vegetation for some species. These species are rare or threatened and their habitat is described as either dispersed or highly localised (ie remaining habitat within Native Vegetation is either greater than or less than 2000 ha respectively based on IUCN categorisation). These models have been developed for use in the native vegetation removal regulations. Thresholds have been applied to the maps because lower likelihood areas do not receive species-specific consideration in the assessment process. Habitat importance is ranked for dispersed species; for highly localised habitats it is equal across the map. The values stored in these data are used to calculate habitat value and offsets under the native vegetation removal regulations (2017).
Note that for dispersed species the values stored in these data must be divided by 100 to calculate the habitat importance score.
Dataset Series Naming:
NVR2017_HIM[taxa_id]_vg94.tif
where
taxa_id is based on VBA taxon_id
vg94 is the projection vicgrid94.

- Purpose
- This datasets support species specific considerations associated with Native Vegetation Clearing Regulations (2017). It is important to understand the distribution of a species' habitat as part of making decisions that enable species to persist in the future. These models are primary inputs to NVR Location data for Native Vegetation Regulation (NVR2017_LOCATION).

Quality
- Conceptual Consistency
- Includes species point data from VBA where no model exists or in addition to model
- Missing Data
- Victoria Currently this series includes rare or threatened flora & fauna species which have sufficient survey records to create models and maps. This includes dispersed species (i.e. habitat > 2000 ha) and highly localised species (i.e. habitat area <= 2000ha), for the purpose of the DELWP's 'Guidelines for the removal, destruction or lopping of native vegetation' (December 2017). Completeness Verification: Where no model exists for a particular species the sites are used to show the distribution of that species.
- Excess Data
- Continuous grid attributes of 0 to 100 where 100 is the highest importance score and 0 is the lowest. Highly Localised species is not ranked, only have the score of 100 or 0 (binary).
- Attribute Quality
- These data are a combination of site observations and models and as such are indications of the importance of habitat. Some species are known to predominantly inhabit non-native vegetation. This modelled data component does not capture this. Models of habitat are not intended to equate with species presence. Other factors such as natural disturbances, losses due to historic catastrophes, and the impact of predators and seasonal factors influence whether a species is present in habitat at any given time. These data are highly reliant on survey records that indicate the suitability of a particular environment for a species. New records may influence future spatial models of suitable habitat.

Lineage
- Description
- Processing took place in EnSym - MATLAB database.
- Statement
- Dataset Source: 1. The landscape units mask was applied to all habitat distribution suitability final raw models, at and produced by ARI, based on known locations. 2. Thresholds for each species are unique, which were applied to each model of datasets, which were supplied by ARI. 3. Each model was masked within the NVR2017_EXTENT. 4. For species where there was insufficient data to create a model, the models were created from point observations of the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas (VBA) only. 5. Models were combined with NV_CONDITION information. 6. All models were combined with the known site locations from VBA points as per feedback from specialists. Dataset Originality: Primary & Derived
