Tolerable fire interval status of Vegetation on public land
dataset:
FIREECOL_STATUS_TFI
This layer shows the modelled Tolerable Fire Interval (TFI) status of vegetation on Victorian public land between years 2002 and 2015.
TFIs are the minimum and maximum recommended time intervals between fire events for a particular vefetation community (see below for full definitions). The time interval is derived from the vital attributes of plant and animal species that occupy the vegetation community.
The dataset categorises the landscape into five categories: Below minimum tolerable fire interval; Within tolerable fire interval; Above maximum tolerable fire interval; Public land with no recorded fire history; and Private land is also mapped.
For a full understanding of the concepts on which this dataset is based, please see DSE Fire and adaptive management report no. 84, "Growth stages and tolerable fire intervals for Victoria's native vegetation data sets", David Cheal, 2010.
Minimum TFI describes the minimum time required between two successive fire events at a site in order that a vegetation community or its constituent species can persist and have every reasonable chance of reaching maturity and setting seed. Expressed in years.
Maximum TFI describes the maximum time required between two successive fire events at a site in order that a vegetation community or its constituent species can persist in the absence of fire. Expressed in years.
The layer was created by the Fire and Emergency Management Division in the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, and completed September 30th 2015.

Description
- Title
- Tolerable fire interval status of Vegetation on public land
- Alternate title
- FIREECOL_STATUS_TFI
- Purpose
- FIRE_ECOL_STATUS_TFI is used in annual reporting on changes in Tolerable Fire Interval status of Victorian public land. The layer also provides the base data for several fire ecology analytical and planning processes.

Lineage
- Statement
- Dataset Source: The tolerable fire interval status layer is created annually based on the FIRE_HISTORY layer, the FIRE_ECOL_EFGEVD layer, and a tolerable fire interval by EFG look up table [EFG_EVD_TFI (NOV 2011).csv]. TFIs were assigned to EFGs as part of a research project undertaken in 2010. A summary table of TFIs of EVD and EFG attribute fields is available in the relevant research report. See DSE Fire and adaptive management report no. 84, "Growth stages and tolerable fire intervals for Victoria's native vegetation data sets", David Cheal, 2010. Dataset Originality: Derived

- Refer to FIRE_ECOL_EFGEVD and FIRE_HISTORY. Refer to NV2005_EVCEBC for attribute accuracy associated with spatial data from which FIRE_ECOL_EFGEVD was derived. Notably, EVDs consist of two or more EVCs and are therefore even more heterogeneous than EVCs. The assignment of tolerable fire intervals to EVDs (and EFG attribute fields) was based on flora records (from DSE's Vital Attributes Database) where they were available. Detailed research on the fire ecology of Australian native vegation communities is patchy. Therefore most TFIs were estimated using acombination of expert knowledge and modelling. The uncertainty associated with the TFIs has not been quanitified. However, the TFIs are conservative and based on a precautionary approach.

Missing Data
- Comments
- Wildfires information has been collected for the East Gippsland old-growth study area. The dataset for the central highlands is essentially complete, however no new records beyond 1993 have been recorded. The datasets for the North East and Goldfileds areas are currently being compiled. Vegetation on public land in Victoria
