Title: Australian fur seal (Brown fur seal) colonies in Victorian marine waters and adjacent Tasmanian waters
Anzlic ID: ANZVI0803002149

Abstract:
This layer identifies the location of Australian fur seal haul-out sites and breeding colonies in Victoria's marine waters and adjacent Tasmanian waters. The Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) is also known as the Brown fur seal, Cape fur seal and South African fur seal. The layer is a points coverage with the point location representing approximately the centre of the colony. Sites were identified from published field surveys of seals colonies in the Bass Strait region and from personal communications made by experts in the field.

Positional Accuracy:
The locations of the colonies were identified utilising a 1:25,000 coastline as a base layer, but the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the site locations have not been verified in the field. The point symbol represents the approximate centre of the colony and sources of variations in precision will primarily relate to where larger colonies are spread over a wide area extending around the point location and where the actual locations of the seals on the shore vary due to daily weather conditions, swell strength and direction etc.
Attribute Accuracy:
Attribution of all features has been validated by the Fisheries Research Branch of Fisheries Victoria.
Logical Consistency:

Data Source:
Dataset Source: Information was derived from published information on field surveys of seal colonies and also personal observations of coastal rangers and other relevant coastal management personnel.
Principal sources of information were reports by R.M. Warnecke and observations by John Arnould, Marine Mammals Research Group, Macquarie University and Roger Kirkwood, Phillip Island Nature Park.

History: An additional point for a colony at Cape Volney observed in 2010 was added and populations for all sites, based on data published by R. Kirkwood et al in the report "Continued population recovery of Australian Fur Seals" published in Marine and Freshwater Research 61: 695-701 and other data in unpublished reports by R. Kirkwood, were updated in March 2012.
