Monitoring Sites Database Survey Points
dataset:
MSD_POINTS
Project HawkEye is a biodiversity monitoring project created to study the impact of fire and planned burning on biodiversity. One deliverable for the HawkEye project is the establishment of a monitoring sites database to store information about monitoring sites (not the actual data that is collected). This spatial layer is one of the outputs from the project designed to provide a single point of reference for this information.

Description

- Monitoring Sites Database Survey Points

- Purpose
- Potential uses of monitoring site data include: 1: to contribute to the organisation of planned burns (for fuel reduction and ecological management) by providing planning staff with location and contact information regarding monitoring sites that may be impacted by planned burn activities. Arrangements can then be made to minimise the risk that sites may be damaged or treated inappropriately. 2: to assist staff at DSE offices and the DSE Customer Service Centre to supply relevant information about monitoring sites to other DSE staff or members of the public who find research markers or evidence of monitoring activites in the field. 3: to assist internal and external science staff to identify other monitoring sites that might contribute useful data to their studies.
- Supplemental Information
- History: Initial version developed March 2013 Relationship to other Datasets: This layer is one of four spatial layers produced by the derivation process (points, arcs and polygon features along with a simplified version of the point features). They all have identical attibute structures. - Dataset Source: Hawkeye source data from mulitple sources plus information extracted from the Victorian Biodiveristy Atlas (VBA) Dataset Originality: Derived
- Description
- Hawkeye source data is transformed from MS ACCESS and other format sources into a common CSV fromat from which a point features shapefile is produced. The attributes of the resultant shapefile are then expanded by extracting selected infromation from the VBA. The final shapefile is then loaded into the DSE CSDL as an SDE layer in the FLORAFAUNA1 schema.

Positional Accuracy
- Comments
- Spatial data is derived from decimal degree Lat/Long attributes that are specifed to 12 decimal places so the precision of the location far exceeds the actual accuracy. Actual accuracy is limited by the type of device used to obtain the Lat/Long co-ordinate. This can be presumed to be in the order of 1 to 5 metres for hand held GPS devices.
Conceptual Consistency
- Comments
- Data is derived from multiple primary sources that are identifed in the layer. Caution should be exercised when comparing attributes form different sources
Missing Data
- Comments
- Specific areas of the State of Victoria where monitoring activity is concentrated. Completeness Verification: not known
Excess Data
- Comments
- Data is derived from multiple primary sources so the completeness of the information associated with some attributes may vary.
