Victorian Coastline 2008

dataset: VIC_COASTLINE_2008
Coastline of Victoria based primarily on zero metre (0m) contour dataset from the Vicmap Elevation Coastal DEM and Contours product derived using LIDAR and reviewing this dataset against the most recent and highest resolution aerial photography available in the DSE CIP image repository. Where LIDAR contours were absent or of poor quality, the coastline was digitised from recent API. For MGA Zone 54, zero contour was largely incomplete, and 0.5m contour was used due to the absence of a satisfactory 0m contour. Where no LIDAR and photography was available, Framework was used (including for internal state boundaries).

Dataset Source: Developed closed coastline boundary using DSE acquired Lidar "0" height contour (for MGA Zone 55, "0.5m" contour for MGA Zone 54 , Vicmap Framework verified against imagery and supplemented via visual interpretation of recent imagery. Aerial Photography was sourced from DSE CIP image repository. LIDAR contours were used to generate 92% of the coastline by length. Dataset Originality: Derived

Positional Accuracy

Sourced digital accuracy from imagery is within 50cm pixel resolution. Vector information captured at approx 1:1000 mapscale resolution. Topological testing was undertaken for shared nodes. It follows that the estimated accuracy of the spatial data is +/-2.0m. Given the time differences in LIDAR returns it is clear that the coastline does not consistently depict high or low tide, but rather a general or average view of the coastline (or possibly a mean sea level) on a statewide basis.
