Tree Cover Change in Victoria Between 1990 and 1993
dataset:
TCH100_9093
This layer contains polygons showing tree cover change as defined by woody vegetation greater than 2 metres in height and with a crown cover (foliar density) greater than 10 percent. Tree cover is mapped down to a minimum area of one hectare. Attributes outlining the causes of tree cover change are assigned for areas greater than 1 hectare. This layer was derived from LANDSAT TM digital data.

- Purpose
- This layer depicts polygons showing tree cover change as defined by woody vegetation greater than 2 metres in height and with a crown cover (foliar density) greater than 10 percent. Tree cover is mapped down to a minimum area of one hectare. Areas of tree cover change are mapped down to a minimum area of 1 hectares. This layer was derived from LANDSAT TM digital data.

- Supplemental Information
- Relationship to other Datasets: TREE100 layer had been derived from this layer. FCOV1000_1869 and FCOV500_7287 were both mapped at a scale of 1000000 and 500000 respectively. Furthermore the forest cover data for the FCOV1000_1869 layer were manually mapped from historical manuscript and for the FCOV500_7287 layers, forest cover boundaries were manually mapped from Landsat MSS transparencies. Therefore these two layers are different from TCH100_XY and TREE100 in terms of mapping method, scale and details. Current Design Issues: The layer was created to give an accurate assessment of tree cover extent for the state of Victoria and to provide a baseline dataset for further projects based around tree cover. This layer shows only the change in tree cover. Related Documents: None Tree Cover Change in Victoria 1869 to 1993 An outline of Methods for Mapping and Monitoring.Natural Resource Systems.

- Attribute Quality
- A random sampling technique was applied to each map sheet of the 1990 dataset to assess reliability. Reliability varied from 81 to 89 percent averaging 84.5 across Victoria. The 1993 dataset highlighted errors in the 1990 dataset which were corrected resulting in a much improved accuracy over that initially sampled.

Lineage
- Description
- Digital (unsupervised) classification to produce 100 classes per LANDSAT TM scene carried out on ER Mapper. One hundred classes were assigned as having tree cover present or absent for each year. Tree cover classifications for each year were overlayed in GRID and a change dataset produced. Areas of change were checked and edited using aerial photography, local knowledge, existing maps, GIS analysis and field checking.
- Statement
