Agricultural Landuse (not current - see revised LANDUSE250)
dataset:
LUSE250_1991
This layer delineates broad agricultural land uses in Victoria.
LUSE250_1991 was created by manually interpreting 1991 LANDSAT TM satellite data and incorporating forest cover boundaries from FORCOV500-87. The land use boundaries have been registered to 1:500,000 topographic features. (not current - see revised LANDUSE250)

- Purpose
- The layer is primarily used to delineate broad agricultural land uses in Victoria. This information was initially used to support the State of the Environment Report on Agriculture (1992), and has more recently been used to support the Decade of Landcare program.

- Supplemental Information
- History: On the 1 August 1994, custodian responsibilities passed from the Geographic Information Systems Section to the Land and Catchment Appraisal Unit. In November 1997 this layer (LANDUSE250) was superseded by a new version and renamed LUSE250_1991. Relationship to other Datasets: LANDUSE250 utilised forest cover boundaries from FORCOV500-87. The differentiation of native forest and softwood forest areas has been cross referenced with the VEG500 and PLU500 layers. Current Design Issues: At small scales, Land use classification must be simple. The classification used is appropriate for the 1:250 000 scales at the which the LANDSAT TM was manually interpreted. Future Design Issues: The layer will be superseded by a 1:100 00 data set. The methodology used to interpret land use at this scale is currently being developed by CNR in conjunction with the Murry Darling Basin Commission (MDBC). The land use classification used in LANDUSE250 will need to be reviewed in the light of the new classification.<P>A numeric code for Land use categories should be adopted. - Missing Data
- The data set is complete for the State, although softwood plantation information requires refinement. The data set is complete for the State, although softwood plantation information requires refinement.
- Attribute Quality
- For areas greater than 50 ha., an error 1 in 100 is appropriate based on checking procedures. This equates to 99% accuracy. For areas less than 50 ha., an average error of 1 in 20 is reasonable equating to 95% accuracy
- Positional Accuracy
- Precision: 100 m to 1 km. Determination: Deductive Estimate Based on a data entry scale of 1 : 250 000 and the nature of land use boundaries, errors of up to 3 mm. are possible on the map translating to positional errors on the group of 100 m. to 750 m.
Lineage
- Description
- 1991 LANDSAT TM was visually interpreted on to 1:250 000 base maps. Base map information was then transferred to digital 1 : 500 000 topographic features displayed at 1: 250 000 scale and subsequently digitised. FORCOV500_87 was used as a template and land use boundaries and attributes added. The data set may have been cleaned in a data capture process using a fuzzy tolerance of up to 10 m. The basic processes used to derive LANDUSE250 are as follows: 1/. LUSE250_1991 was spatially registered to be more similar to LANDMMT100, where it was obvious the arcs represented the same features. 2/. These two layers were overlaid, and polygon values were recoded in preparation for subsequent sliver removal. 3/. An intelligent sliver removal process was employed that merged slivers based on their most dominant neighbour. 4/. Artefacts generated in step 3 were removed, the state border was replaced using VIC100 and tiles were mapjoined. 5/. All polygons less than 62500 m2, other than islands off the coast, were eliminated.
