Abstract:
This layer provides the boundaries of the River Basins of Victoria, and is part of a system devised by the Australian Water Resources Council (AWRC).
The basins within Victoria are contained within two drainage divisions; the Murray Darling Division and the South East Coast Division.

Purpose:
This dataset identifies major river catchment boundaries, and can be used in conjunction with other data sets to form the basis of regional water and land resource planning and management, and to assist in other forms of planning.

Dataset Source: The base maps were interpreted by Environmental Science students at Rusden College using 1:100 000 topographic maps. Boundaries were inferred from the contours and the upper level stream system. For approximately six mapsheets contours were not available and the boundaries were derived from and the upper level stream system. In the flatter areas, such as the Wimmera, boundaries are fairly arbitrary. Centre for Land Protection Research then digitised these drafted boundaries. They have now been put into ArcSDE for MapShare purposes.

Relationship to other Datasets: This layer is the basis for other covers and future layers which will be requiring their natural or administrative boundaries to accord with catchment boundaries. Already this layer has been used to derive the LandCare Regional boundaries, and the Catchment and Land Protection board boundaries.

Current Design Issues: The layer design identifies each individual Basin separately. The principal reason for layer creation is to assist regional administration for water and land resource planning.

Future Design Issues: Reliability attributes will be attached to the boundary lines to indicate degrees of confidence which can be placed in boundary precision. Imprecision may result from poor expression of the surface drainage system, or from using poor quality base data. The AWRC may be undertaking a review of River Basins.
Another layer has been created for sub-catchments (subcatch100), this is completed for North Central, Glenelg and Corangamite CMA's.
