Aquifer Salinity - Basal
dataset:
AQUIFER_SAL_BASAL
This dataset contains groundwater salinity information for boreholes which had terminated at least 5m and no more than 50m above bedrock. The bores have been extracted predominantly from the Groundwater Management System (GMS) and the State Observation Bore Network (SOBN).
It should be noted that the analysis undertaken with the salinity data was only of a preliminary nature and should be treated with a critical approach. Local validation of the data (e.g. screen depths) needs to be undertaken in detail.
The dataset was compiled by GHD to inform the report 'Potential Influences of Geological Structures on Groundwater Flow Systems' for DEPI's Secure Allocation Future Entitlements (SAFE) Project.

- Dataset Source: Groundwater salinity information was collated from the Groundwater Management System (GMS) and from bores drilled for a ranges of purposes including State Observation Borehole Network (SOBN) and private production. Many of these datasets are of 'one-off' values collected over many years and the data are of varying quality, often lacking screen depth, lithology, bedrock depth information, etc. A pragmatic method was used to determine bedrock depth at each salinity bore by back interpolating a 'correct' bedrock depth grid onto the salinity bore and then calculating if the bore penetrated bedrock and whether the salinity was likely to be in bedrock or above bedrock (assuming that the top of the screened interval was at or within 5m of the bore depth).
