Vicmap Admin - Ward Polygon 2017
dataset:
WARD_2017
Part of the Vicmap Admin dataset series. This dataset contains WARD Boundaries (WARDS) for all LGA's within Victoria, used
for local government elections. The WARD_2017 data set of Victorian local government ward boundaries was created by the Victorian
Electoral Commission on behalf of Local Government Victoria as part of the Electoral Representation Review process (www.vec.vic.gov.au/repreviews).
NOTE: This dataset was superceded by WARD_2020 in August 2020, and was withdrawn in January 2021 from the Vicmap Admin product.

Description
- Title
- Vicmap Admin - Ward Polygon 2017
- Alternate title
- WARD_2017
- Purpose
- Vicmap Admin provides an accurate representation of various adminstrative boundaries across Victoria, at a capture scale of 1:25,000 or better. It is used in a variety of applications, particularly in emergency services, natural resource management, planning and development, and digital map publications.
- Supplemental Information
- History: The WARD boundaries dataset for Victoria was established by the Department for Victorian Communities, Local Government Victoria. The Victorian Electoral Commission is contracted to review these boundaries on rotating 3 general election cycle in line with the Local Government Act 1989. Relationship to other Datasets: This layer is related to the LGA_POLYGON boundaries. No WARDS should cross an LGA boundary (excepting that there are slivers and overlaps currently within this dataset). - Statement
- Dataset Source: WARD_2017 is directly extracted from the VEC¿s own Statewide Wards Master File. New extracts are triggered by changed ward boundaries from Electoral Representation Reviews or Subdivision Reviews. Updates for VicMap are normally sent in batches with several changes in one file. The boundaries in this update will be used for all the Councils holding elections in October 2016. The 2017 wards file was updated to reflect changes to the Greater Geelong City Council structure as gazetted on 29 June 2017. Ward boundaries for all other councils remain unchanged from the Wards 2016 file. Dataset Originality: Derived

- Approx. 99%. The methodology used in the establishment of the WARDS was primarily a self-checking process. Further QA was done via a cycle of maps produced for shires. Maintenance of the WARD data set has been done at the Victorian Electoral Commission.
Positional Accuracy
- Comments
- All external boundaries have been aligned to 2016 Vicmap LGA_POLYGON, with the exception of Borough of Queenscliffe, for which the difference between the maritime boundary of the existing ward object and the maritime boundary for LGA_POLYGON is sufficiently large as to be visually distracting in such a small LGA. Internal boundaries are aligned to Vicmap Transport or Hydro primarily, or to Vicmap Property when no other features are available. Therefore the underlying accuracy is equivalent to the datasets it is aligned to.
Conceptual Consistency
- Comments
- Topologically Structured. WARD boundaries may contain overlaps and slivers due to maintenance regime. Most unincorporated areas are not included, but a decision was made between SII and VEC on 17th August 2016, to keep French Island, and remove other Alpine Areas, so that the Victorian outline does not look strange. Only three relevant fields are populated for French Island. Melbourne City Council is represented as one Unsubdivided object. Even though there are different elections for the Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor and the Councillors, there is only one spatial object. The 2017 wards file was updated to reflect changes to the Greater Geelong City Council structure as gazetted on 29 June 2017. Ward boundaries for all other councils remain unchanged from the Wards 2016 file. There is also an additional field, GAZETTAL_DATE in the data. This is the date when ward boundaries were published in the Government Gazette.
