Title: Fire history overlay of most recent fires
Anzlic ID: ANZVI0803004774

Abstract:
This layer has been derived from FIRE_HISTORY data and represents the spatial extent of the last fires recorded, primarily on public land. The layer stores details of the last time an area was known to be burnt by wildfire or prescribed burning and represents a consecutive overlay of all FIRE_HISTORY layers, from older fire seasons to the most recent fire seasons.

This data set is current to 2022/23 fire season. There is no severity data for Gippsland in this version for season 18/19 and 19/20.

Purpose:
This data is derived from the FIRE_HISTORY dataset. The layer stores details of the last time an area was known to be burnt by wildfire or prescribed burning. It is current to 2022/23 fire season and includes severity, except for Gippsland 18/19 and 19/20 severity.

History: This data set has been derived from the Fire100_XY layer. Coverages based on year within the Fire100_XY layer have been overlayed with each other. This was performed in a cyclic manner based on one years data overlaying the preceding years. This allows for the most recent information to be the last information overlayed. As this dataset is wholly derived from Fire100_XY, attributes and lookup tables for Lastburnt100 have been mimicked. Layer design for Lastburnt100 has been maintained due to this dependency. Any changes identifiable in this layer design need to be addressed to the Fire100_XY dataset.

Relationship to other Datasets: This dataset is wholly derived from Fire100_XY. Fire100_XY is updated annually and this layer will need to be re-derived to maintain its currency.

Current Design Issues: The current layer design reflects the structure of DELWPs FIRES (FIREWEB) and FUEL MANAGEMENT (FMS) databases and emap spatial extents. The firekey attribute in the dataset provides the link to these two FFMVIC databases and CFAs IMS database. Other dataset attributes allow information annotated on source maps to be entered, especially in the case of historical fire information where no fire key is often provided to allow referencing to the relevent Fire database.

The location attribute (that is replicated as part of the firekey attribute) can be either the former Forests Commission of Victoria (FCV) district, former Fire region, or current Fire District. It is currently proposed that only fire history information from the 1996/97 season inclusive will require the location and firekey fields to be completed. If historical fires are to have the firekey attribute recorded then this issue, particularly validation checks, will require further consideration.

Future Design Issues: Future enhancements to this layer may include fire frequency information and possibly changing the layer into a raster format, ie. ArcInfo GRID.
