Coastal bird habitats on the Victorian coast (light/generalised version)

dataset: COASTAL_BIRD_HABITAT_LITE
This layer identifies bird habitats in the Victorian coastal region. The layer is a simplified polygon coverage with the polygon areas representing the main area of the respective bird habitats. Sites were identified from a broad range of published and unpublished sources of information and from personal communications made by experts in the field. In 2015 some additional locations were added with data from Birdlife Australia Shorebird 2020 Data. This dataset was formerly know as SHOREBIRD HABITAT but was renamed as it contains sites for seabirds and other birds.

Dataset Source: Information was mainly derived from databases maintained by the Arthur Rylah Institute. Other information has been derived from published reports and also personal observations of bird observers, coastal rangers and other relevant coastal management personnel. Sources of data on species and habitats are identified in the BIRD_EXPERTS.DBF. In 2015 some additional locations were added with data from Birdlife Australia Shorebird 2020 Data. Shorebird habitats have either been digitised from maps found in the relevant information sources, interpretation of aerial photography or by utilising the digital 1:25,000 coastline and hydrographic layers as base layers. Attributes for each polygon were developed by the Arthur Rylah Institute (see Arthur Rylah Institute, 1999).
