Surface-groundwater interactions were mapped as part of the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) Sustainable Yields Project. This mapping represents a snapshot in time of fluxes to or from major rivers across the Murray-Darling Basin. The regions where connectivity mapping was conducted were: Loddon-Avoca, Campaspe, Goulburn-Broken, Ovens, Murray, Murrumbidgee, Lachlan, Macquarie-Castlereagh, Namoi, Gwydir, Border Rivers, Condamine-Balonne and Barwon-Darling. This dataset includes the qualitative mapped results of the rivers within Victoria and indicates where river reaches are gaining/losing/seasonally varying in nature. Dataset Source: The original data were sourced for five surface water catchments across Victoria, namely Ovens, Campaspe, Gouldburn-Broken, Loddon-Avoca and Murray. The data consisted of the following: Ovens: Groundwater levels for the catchment (GMS, 2007) River gauge locality information by Theiss (2007) Stream alignments from Geoscience Australia, Geodata 3 Campaspe: Groundwater levels for the catchment (GMS, 2007) River gauge locality information by Theiss (2007) Stream alignments from Geoscience Australia, Geodata 3 Goulburn-Broken: Groundwater levels for the catchment (GMS, 2007) River gauge locality information and river elevations at those points by Theiss (2007) Stream alignments from Geoscience Australia, Geodata Loddon Avoca: Groundwater levels for the catchment (GMS, 2007) River gauge locality information and river elevations at those points by Theiss (2007) Stream alignments from Geoscience Australia, Geodata 3 Murray: Groundwater levels for the catchment (GMS, 2007, and DWE, 2007) River gauge locality information by Theiss (2007) River elevations at those points from the Pinneena database (DWE 2006) Stream alignments from Geoscience Australia, Geodata 3 The following method was applied to generate the dataset: (1) Monitored water levels from bores screened within the water table aquifer were collated for the followed dates selected for analysis: Ovens - March 2005 Goulburn-Broken - February 2006 Campaspe - March 2005 Loddon Avoca - January 2006 Murray - March 2005 (2) River height readings at gauge points along the river were used to define river elevation between major weirs and storages. Curves were fitted in order to obtain a continuous water level data series along the river from which the depth to watertable and flux calculations could be assessed; (3) An automated contouring package was used to generate a potentiometric surface map of the groundwater, using the reduced groundwater levels and modelled river elevations. Interpretation of this map indicates where the river was gaining and losing; (4) The attribution of the original dataset was simplified to contain only the RiverName, ReportingArea (catchment) and the Qualitative Interaction. The interaction describes the direction of flux relative to the surface water feature. For example, a gaining river reach is indicative of a waterway that gains groundwater.
