Victorian winterfill sustainable diversion limits and winterfill commitment
dataset:
SDL_DATA
Winterfill sustainable diversion limit (SDL) volumes have been developed across Victoria and represent the upper limit on winterfill diversions, beyond which there is an unacceptable risk that additional extractions may degrade the environment. Combined with the volume of current extractions the SDL provides water managers with a volume of available water in catchments across Victoria.
This dataset shows for each 1611 Victorian SDL intermediate catchments: the diversion limit, the level of winterfill commitment as at 2014, and the volume of water available for new entitlements or trade.
The catchments were originally developed in 2004. A major review in 2014 resulted in the addition of several additional catchments including the upper Snowy River, Phillip Island, French Island, and several new catchments in the Wimmera basin.

Description
- Title
- Victorian winterfill sustainable diversion limits and winterfill commitment
- Alternate title
- SDL_DATA
- Purpose
- For unregulated surface water catchments across Victoria, the winterfill SDL volumes are one of several tools available to help water corporations assess applications for new licences to divert water or trading licences, for use between July and October. For current entitlements refer to the Victorian Water Register. Also note other policies such as the Sustainable Water Strategies which may override winterfill SDL volumes. To interpret the winterfill SDL data and understand how this information could be used for water resource management decisions, speak to your relevant water licensing authority.
- Supplemental Information
- The data in this table is associated with the intermediate catchments in the layer SDL_CATCH. Victorian SDL map layers and summary information is available through the publicly accessible Mapshare platform: Mapshare.vic.gov.au. A help report on Victorian SDLs is also available on Mapshare: https://mapshare.vic.gov.au/MapshareVic/Help/SDL%20map%20online%20help.pdf To use or understand particular fields within this database, please contact the DEECA data custodian.

- Dataset Source: SDL data has been compiled from hydrological analysis undertaken by SKM in 2001-2003. Current winterfill commitment data was updated on 2014 based on Bulk Entitlement REALM models, farm dam spatial data (refer to CSDL layer FARM_DAMS), and unregulated entitlement data from the Victorian Water Register (extracted on 27 March 2014).
