Abstract:
This layer identifies categories of modelled forest categories determined through an analysis of readily available authoritative forest disturbance datasets on public land. The dataset identifies areas likely to contain old-growth forest, amongst other forest categories.
Search Words: Biota
Purpose:
This dataset identifies categories of forest modelled through an analysis of forest resource datasets and readily available authoritative forest disturbance datasets. Forest resource datasets comprise: forest growth stage, ecological vegetation classes and structural vegetation. The forest disturbance datasets datasets comprise: historical and contemporary timber harvesting, grazing, agricultural clearing, mining, wildfire, and fuel reduction burn records.

The current geospatial analysis process used by NRE to model old-growth forest has been developed to manage the complex rules and spatial analysis functions that the modelling requires. The analysis process utilises a raster based model and infrastructure initially developed and used in the North East Old-growth Forest Study. The process is undertaken using a 30m cell size and on a 1:100 000 mapsheet basis. The dataset identifies areas likely to contain old-growth forest, amongst other forest categories.

The layer has, to date, principally been used to delineate old-growth forest and National Estate areas in two key regions of the State - Gippsland (as defined by the Gippsland Regional Forest Agreement Area) and Midlands-Otways and Portland-Wimmera (as defined by the Western Regional Forest Agreement Area). This layer is one of the key output datasets created from the analysis process used to delineate old-growth forest.

The layer has a wide range of applications in both flora and fauna issues.

Stored Data Format:
Available Format(s) Types: DIGITAL - All major formats available
Positional Accuracy:
100m to 1km.
Positional accuracy is a function of pen thickness, base accuracy and nature of boundaries mapped in the source datasets, and the accuracy of the rules applied. Map errors of 0.5 mm to 3 mm, or 50 m to 300 m are possible.
Attribute Accuracy:
No comprehensive accuracy assessment has been completed for the resultant modelled dataset presented here. However, on the basis of a review and discussions with field based NRE staff, the modelled information is believed to accurately reflect the available information with larger stands of old-growth forest having a reasonably high reliability on public land. Smaller isolated stands modelled as old-growth forest and stands abutting cleared private land have a lower reliability.
Logical Consistency:
EVC and other source information is generally registered to the 1:100,000 base features, although in the case of GSTAGE100 information is registered to 1:25 000 base features.

Relationship to other Datasets: This dataset is created through a grid based analysis process that uses EVC100, GSTAGE100, SVEG100 and a broad range of disturbance datasets, including FIRE100_{year}. The dataset is also combined with the Forest Service AVAIL100 dataset, and a buffer process assigned to this dataset in combination with TREE100.

The dataset identifies areas likely to contain old-growth forest, amongst other forest categories. The OG100 dataset that identifies areas of old-growth forest is derived from this dataset. This dataset is also used to create the DISTURB100 dataset.

Current Design Issues: The process for defining forest categories in the context of old-growth forest attributes is relatively new. There are two attributes in the dataset: one defining the assigned forest category on the basis of the old-growth forest modelling process, the second attribute identifies the study in which the analysis was undertaken and subsequent dataset created.

Future Design Issues: This layer could accommodate additional attributes that clarify the disturbance and forest growth stage attributes of each site.
