dataset: WETLAND_PRE_EUROPEAN
Polygons showing the extent of wetlands in Victoria prior to European settlement. Includes all wetlands from Wetland_1788 and naturally occurring wetlands that were added to the updated current wetland extent (WETLAND_CURRENT). Where available original Corrick classification (primary categories based on water and salinity regimes) were retained. The polygon boundaries were derived from aerial photography interpretation. The most recent update to this database was in 2021.

Dataset Source: The data has been prepared primarily from aerial photo interpretation and used existing geospatial datasets that provided context and informed the identification of wetland boundaries (e.g. vegetation mapping and topography). It was recorded whether pre-European mapping had come from the original 1788 spatial layer or from 2013, 2014, 2017 or 2021 mapping (newly mapped naturally occurring wetlands were added). For features sourced from the 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2021 mapping an attempt was made to determine if the pre-European wetland was larger or smaller than current mapped extent.
