This dataset records where the Marginal Mile has been identified across Eastern Victoria. The data was created from a review across all government gazettes in 2019/20. This is a subset of the Fire Protected Area.
The marginal mile layer consists of private land within 1.5km of national park, State forest or protected public land in the east of the state. DELWP is responsible for fire prevention within the marginal mile and declares the prohibited period across 14 local government areas (LGAs) in the east annually for this tenure. Information included is LGAs, PLM 25, town and major road names.

Purpose:
The Fire Protected Area dataset as defined by the Code of Practice for Bushfire is:
Fire Protected Area 230 As defined under the Forests Act 1958, includes any land, which is
(a) within any public land (as defined in this Code); or
(b) (unless excised in accordance with the Forests Act 1958) within 1.5 km of i any reserved forest or area of unoccupied Crown land proclaimed as a protected forest; ii any national park; or iii any protected public land.
(c) Protected forest means all unoccupied Crown land proclaimed as such under the Forests Act 1958 or any corresponding previous enactment, and every unused road and every water frontage as defined in the Land Act 1958
This dataset currently is for the East of Victoria and public land means both DELWP and PV land.
