Abstract:
This layer contains points showing the location of water monitoring points, groundwater bores, index of stream condition and marine monitoring sites. The data is sourced from the Victorian Water Resources Data Warehouse http://www.dse.vic.gov.au/waterdata.
Search Words: Inland waters
Purpose:
The layer provides consolidated statewide detail on the location of groundwater bores and water monitoring points. It is a key layer involved in supporting hydrological research, monitoring of catchment processes and measurement of effectiveness of catchment management strategies.

The layer has different classes of monitoring sites, namely it has been divided into monitoring type (either the quantity or quality), operational status (either active or inactive) and waterbody monitored (eg Groundwater bores or Lakes etc). The points show the approximate location of either where the samples are taken in lakes, reservoirs or estuaries, or where the monitoring station is located on waterways.

Numbering of the monitoring points differ;
GMS Bores are marked with a 'B' at the start of the code (format: Bxxxxx).
Hydrographic and VWQMN Sites: denoted by a six digit code (based on Australian Water Resources Council drainage divisions). The first number refers to the division the stream drains to, the next two digits refer to the basin the site is found in. The last three follow a numerical sequence where higher numbers refer to sites more recently commissioned.

Positional Accuracy:
Precision: The current positional accuracy of the bore locations is variable. It is estimated that approximately 10% of the bores are in the wrong locations to a significant degree. A more comprehensive spatial error analysis is required.
Determination: - Not Documented
Attribute Accuracy:
Only a subset of attributes from the parent database have been included in the layer. The accuracy of these attribute varies across the State.
Logical Consistency:
Because the layer is an aggregation of monitoring sites from several groups and databases this influences it's logical consistency. Bores derived from PIRVic (formerly CLPR) are used for research and groundwater monitoring purposes (and may be located near roads to facilitate measurement) while those from SKM are utilitarian, have differing deployment patterns and support a range of activities (ie. private bores sunk for irrigation, offshore drilling for oil exploration etc).
Data Source:
Dataset Source: The Victorian Water Resouces Data Warehouse obtains data from the Groundwater Management System (GMS) maintained by SKM (previously known as the GDB). Other providers such as CLPR and MPV (GEDIS) provide periodic updates to the GMS.
The surface water data is sourced from a variety of providers, including Hydrographic and Water Quality Contractors, Rural and Regional Water Authorities and Catchment Management Authorities.
