This land use map has been prepared under the NLWRA (NHT) project of Theme 5 (Land use change, productivity and Sustainability) for Gippsland. The map refers to the year 1996-97 and is based on 4 sources of information: (1) Resource data sets of Victoria held at CGDL, DNRE, (2) Satellite imagery, (3) ABS Agricultural Statistics, and (4) Field information. The land use classification scheme that has been followed in this map was developed at a workshop convened by BRS and contributed by Commonwealth and State staff in May 1999. The scheme is a modification of a classification proposed by Baxter and Russell in 1994 for the Murray Darling Basin. The classification is hierarchical in nature, identifying primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. The five primary levels show a hierarchy in terms of human intervention in natural environment.

This land use map has been prepared under contract with Bureau of Rural Sciences (BRS) for AFFA. The classification scheme followed here was the Australia Land Use Mapping (ALUM) classification version 5 (BRS, 2001). ALUM version 5 was developed by BRS as a modification of Baxter - Russell Classification, in coordination with State agencies. This product is based on information from Corporate Geospatial Data Library (CGDL), CAPAD and the planning maps from Infrastructure Department. This product has been field verified after two significant additions to the base product: (1) Agricultural land use classes based on satellite imagery, tree cover and the newly acquired field survey information, and (2) Updates on the intensive uses using aerial photographs where appropriate and field survey information. Product was independently validated. Overall accuracy is 87.46%.
